Prepare the Chili
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes. This step is important to develop flavor.
- Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent. This enhances the sweetness of the onion and infuses the garlic flavor.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, kidney beans, chili beans, and beef broth. Mix well to combine all ingredients.
- Add the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir until the spices are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
- Bring the chili to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the chili to thicken.
Serve the Chili
- While the chili simmers, prepare your hot dogs according to your preference (grilled or boiled).
- Once the chili is ready, place a hot dog in each bun and generously spoon the hot dog chili over the top.
- Top with shredded cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream if desired. Serve immediately for the best flavor.
