Ingredients

For the Chocolate Sponge Cake
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1/2 cup milk room temperature
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Vanilla Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Ganache
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chopped
For Decoration
  • 1 cup green fondant for grass
  • 1 cup white fondant for soccer ball
  • 1/2 cup black fondant for soccer ball patches

Method

Prepare the Chocolate Sponge Cake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sifted flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
Make the Vanilla Frosting
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined. Increase to medium speed and add the heavy cream and vanilla extract. Beat until the frosting is light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
Prepare the Chocolate Ganache
  1. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate.
  2. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth and glossy. Allow to cool slightly before using.
Assemble the Fußball Torte
  1. Once the cakes are completely cool, use a serrated knife to level the tops if necessary. Place one layer on a serving plate.
  2. Spread a layer of vanilla frosting on top of the first cake layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake with the remaining vanilla frosting.
  3. Pour the chocolate ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. Use a spatula to smooth it out if necessary.
  4. Roll out the white fondant to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cover the top of the cake with the white fondant, smoothing it out to remove any air bubbles.
  5. Cut out black patches from the black fondant and arrange them on the white fondant to resemble a soccer ball pattern. Use the green fondant to create grass around the base of the cake.
