Ingredients

For the Ham
  • 1 whole bone-in ham (about 8-10 lbs) Choose a pre-cooked ham for easier preparation.
  • 1 cup water For steaming during roasting.
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup brown sugar Packed.
  • 1/2 cup honey Use a mild honey for balanced sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard Adds a tangy flavor.
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar Provides acidity to balance the sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon For warmth and depth of flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves Adds a fragrant spice.

Method

Prepare the Ham
  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). This temperature allows the ham to heat through without drying out.
  2. Place the ham in a roasting pan, cut side down. This helps retain moisture during cooking.
  3. Pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of the roasting pan. This will create steam, keeping the ham juicy.
  4. Cover the ham loosely with aluminum foil. This prevents the surface from browning too quickly.
Make the Glaze
  1. In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, honey, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves.
  2. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth. This creates a flavorful glaze.
  3. Once combined, bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes to thicken slightly. Remove from heat.
Bake the Ham
  1. Bake the ham in the preheated oven for about 1.5 hours, basting with the glaze every 30 minutes. This ensures the ham absorbs the flavors.
  2. After 1.5 hours, remove the foil and brush the ham with the remaining glaze. This will create a caramelized crust.
  3. Continue to bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F (60°C). Use a meat thermometer for accuracy.
Rest and Serve
  1. Once cooked, remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute.
  2. Slice and serve warm, drizzled with any remaining glaze from the pan.
